Business Client Systems vs Consumer Client Systems

Consumer, Workstation, Precision, Inspiron, Laptop, Business, Commercial, latitude, alienware, Enterprise, optiplex, XPS, client

The following was authored by John Pate, End User Computing

What's the difference between Business and Consumer Client Systems?

In today’s competitive economic environment, minimizing costs of IT expenditures is an absolute requirement to be successful. So the question that has to be asked “does it make sense to purchase those heavily discounted consumer notebooks or desktops for your corporate environment?”

After all, as the commercial famously put it “parts is parts” and if the corporate and consumer systems have the same chipset and processor, isn’t that enough? That is really decision each organization has to make for themselves. However, before making a major switch of product class, it is probably worth understanding how the Dell consumer and relationship systems differ.

Client Systems Lines of Business:

What product lines does Dell offer?

· OptiPlex – Corporate Relationship Desktops

· Latitude – Corporate Relationship Notebooks

· Precision – Corporate Workstations

· Vostro – Small Business Systems

· Inspiron/Adamo/XPS/Studio/Alienware – Consumer Systems

OptiPlex, Latitude, Precision – Dell corporate systems are targeted toward large corporate customers who value stability, manageability, and corporate security. http://www.dell.com/optiplex

Vostro – is designed for small businesses where the machines are deployed for fewer than 20 people – in a non-networked environment. See this website from Dell that spells out this is a “small business” machine. http://www.dell.com/vostro

Consumer (Inspiron/Adamo/XPS/Studio/Alienware) – Internal components change regularly as new technologies are introduced meeting the demand for the latest and greatest features at any point in time.

Relationship Lines of Business are focused on minimizing the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO)

Large organizations typically look at more than just the acquisition cost of hardware and instead focus on the total cost of ownership. These customers have complex environments where internal applications, network compatibility, and security must be tested and qualified before a system can be introduced into a workgroup. Change increases risk and must be carefully evaluated before introduced into an organization. Hardware stability is important in these environments since common parts can reduce learning curves of becoming familiar with new systems and also reduces the complexity of parts management.

Attributes of Relationship systems include:

· Long lifecycles – Stability allows Dell customers to standardize on a single platform and lock on the hardware and image for an extended period of time without changes. For Latitude and OptiPlex, our mainstream systems are available for at least 15 months without hardware changes

· Managed transitions – When the replacement system is introduced, 60-90 days of overlap is offered where the current and new system are both available. This allows time for customers to receive the new system, load their custom image, and test it before deploying it into their environment.

· Global Standard Products– Global customers can obtain the same hardware on a worldwide basis.

· Advanced systems management – Features provide one-to-many and out of band (OOB) capabilities with Intel vPro, Intel Standard Manageability, Broadcom TruManage, and ASF.

· Legacy Operating Systems – Support for the latest operating systems and legacy OS’s such as XP and Vista.

· Support Options– Corporate support options such as same day onsite support, self-maintainer, keep your own hard drive, image installation on the HD from the factory, asset tagging, longer warranties, etc.

· Imaging & updates – All Dell systems have drivers and BIOS updates available online for easy downloads. Documentation is also available on the Dell site for easy availability.

· Deployment services – Options for services such as multipack (several systems in a single box) and reduced documentation ship the systems without DVDs or user’s guides.

· Labor costs – Dell hardware is designed to be easy to deploy and service. Keep in mind most of the leading analyst organizations claim that 70% of the costs of running a PC are upkeep, not acquisition. To reduce upkeep costs Dell provides tool-less desktop chassis, common hardware color coding, and designs that allow for easy access to commonly access components. For example, our Latitude E6410 features an inverted system board which allows a single screw access to the Bluetooth module, memory DIMMs, Wi-Fi, and mobile broadband cards.

Relationship Notebooks:

Latitude relationship notebooks also differ from consumer systems in several significant ways:

· Common peripherals– Share key components such as power adapters, media modules, docking solutions, and monitor stands across multiple generations of E-Family notebooks. Dell Latitude laptops and Dell Precision mobile workstations will continue this family commonality for years to come. As a result, transitioning from the new Dell Latitude and Dell Precision models to future releases is designed to be simpler and less costly than the transition from previous product families because you can eliminate the requirement to purchase new docking peripherals.

· Advanced Security– Dell aims to simplify corporate security for mobile users by offering secure platforms that are easy to deploy, use, and manage. The Latitude family offers a comprehensive suite of security options that enable administrators to deploy secure systems direct from the factory. For example, Dell ControlVault software provides a single firmware location for storing, processing, and managing end-user credentials such as passwords and biometric templates—thereby enabling Latitude products to perform security processing and matching outside the scope of malicious applications. Encrypted solid state and rotating HD options are also offered. A contactless smart card reader can also help control laptop access using multitechnology cards that businesses already have. And the integrated fingerprint reader is an option for the Latitude E6400 for customers wanting multifactor authentication.

· E Docks– Support dual monitors up to 30 inches at their native resolution using DisplayPort connectors, even using integrated notebook graphics.

· Built for “Road Warriors”– Hard drive free-fall sensor automatically parks the heads to protect drives from a drop of as little as 5 inches. Latitude notebooks also feature StrikeZone, which provides protection from flat drops by dispersing energy away from your hard drive in the event of accidental laptop drops and bumps.

· ExpressCharge– feature provides +80% charge times from a flat battery in about an hour, so you can make the most of even short charging opportunities.

· Backlit keyboard– Use your notebook in dark environments such as an airplane without disturbing your neighbor with this option on Latitude notebooks.

· Semi- and Fully-rugged systems– Simplify your notebook fleet using fully or semi-rugged notebook that shares E64x0 notebook images and peripherals.

Relationship Desktops:

Relationship desktops provide customers with key features and services for corporate buyers including:

· Solid state and encrypted HD options

· Multiple chassis options feature image commonality

· New USFF chassis provides internal Power Supply Unit and All-in-One option

· Faster servicing on key components than other tier one vendors

· vPro option on Intel-based notebooks

Relationship Services:

· ProSupport offers IT support tailored to the customers’ environment, not the outdated one-size-fits-all model.

· Warranty Parts Direct: Dell understands many IT professionals have a strong understanding of computer hardware and gain little in going through support checklists. Those customers may wish to use Warranty Parts Direct to request warranty replacement parts from Dell through online dispatch of parts and labor with hardware support https://warrantypartsdirect.dell.com/AMER/Program/index.asp.

· ImageDirectImageAssit 1. Greatly simplifies transitions 2. One image for current and future OptiPlex, Latitude and Dell Precision 3. Patch Management New computers arrive fully compliant with customer security standards 4. Parent/Child Imaging: Each department gets a unique software load without multiple images

· ImageWatch 1. A global tool that provides a 6-month outlook of product changes that include End of Life & Ready to Ship dates for all relationship platforms, peripherals, and software 2. Provides users with proactive communication of changes (and optional email notification) 3. One matter of record for all product transitions world-wide

Consumer Lines of Business are focused on the Latest and Greatest Features at Great Prices

Since consumers want the latest and greatest features, we tend to change these products very often and do not manage the transitions. They also want the latest OS, so XP is not tested, qualified, or supported. Generally speaking, business customers that purchase consumer products become frustrated because we cannot offer the same level of service, support, and stability as we provide in our relationship products. And, to “upgrade” a consumer product to relationship capabilities adds a lot of cost (i.e. additional OS qualifications) which makes them less competitive with pure consumer products and increases the TCO in the long run.

Attributes of Consumer systems include:

· Shorter lifecycles to allow buyers to obtain the “latest and greatest” features.

· The average lifecycle is-5-7 months.

· Light switch transitions that allow new features to be added quickly without technology overlap.

· Different countries have varied needs, so Global availability is not offered.

· Smaller sized environments mean there is no need for Intel vPro or advanced management features.

· The latest operating systems are offered. Legacy operating systems such as XP downgrade options are not available or supported.

· Consumer support options are not cost effective for relationship users.

· Imaging and other large deployment services not available.

Foglight monitoring application components running on Docker Containers

We are starting to get more questions from customers and prospects about monitoring application components that are running on a Docker container. We started testing the different Foglight agent against application components and the results are posted on this page.

The page is still a work in progress and videos will be added as we continue our tests.

You can run the video in full screen and change the settings to 720HD or 1080HD for clearer view.

Intel® Unite™ Introduction

9020M, 7040m, vPro, Intel Unite, optiplex

1  Introduction

Audience: The purpose of this article is to help IT administrators to deploy the Intel® Unite™ ecosystem components (Server and Client applications) into existing enterprise network infrastructure using Dell OptiPlex 9020 micro or 7040 micro desktop computers as Intel® Unite™ display hubs.

Solution overview: Intel® Unite™ is a conferencing technology that utilizes an OptiPlex micro form factor PC to provide IT-managed conference room capabilities. The primary goal of the initial release is to provide a secure wireless connection to conference room displays for domain-joined users. The Intel® Unite™ ecosystem utilizes several individually installed components to establish a secure connection between users PC’s and the conference room display equipment.

1.1  What does Intel® Unite™ do?

Traditional conference rooms without Intel® Unite™

In a traditional conference room, meeting attendees connect a projector cable to their devices to present content.   If more than one presenter wants to share content in a meeting, the projector cable must be passed to each presenter individually.

Intel Conference room with Intel® Unite™

Intel® Unite™ allows presenters to connect their Client devices to a conference room projector wirelessly using the local wireless network, through an Intel® Unite™ Hub installed with the projector. Intel® Unite™ software is designed to allow fast wireless screen sharing and collaboration in 3 steps:

1.  Launch the Intel® Unite™ Client Application

2.  Enter a PIN, displayed by the Intel® Unite™ conference room Hub, to connect to a specific session

3. Click ‘Share’PresentScreenorPresentApplication to displayyourshare content

Intel® Unite™ allows presenters to switch content seamlessly, and more than one presenter can present simultaneously (up to 4)

Intel® Unite™ also allows remotely authorized domain-joined users, presenters, or viewers participate in meetings from outside the local network.

1.2  Where Do I Start?

1.  Review the Standalone Mode vs. Enterprise Mode page to determine which mode best suits your company’s conference area needs.

2.  Review the Intel® Unite™ Deployment page, which includes a quick summary of setup steps, as well as Intel® Unite™ deployment documentation for both Standalone and Enterprise modes.

3.  Optionally, you may also want to review the Dell OptiPlex Hub Setup guidelines to take advantage of additional Intel® Unite™ Hub security features offered by the Dell OptiPlex BIOS.

Also, please feel free to browse the Intel® Unite™ Info Page to learn more about the product, or find other related documentation.

To help with some of the terms used on these pages, you may want to refer to this Intel® Unite™ Terminology & Definitions reference page.

File Transfer (Send File)

Users can send and receive files during sessions

Remote View

A user has the ability to view the screen of the current presenter (Enterprise version only)

Connection consent

This is a configurable option to allow a user to accept or deny

Fast mouse cursor

When a user is sharing their local display, the mouse sprite that appears on the remote display will appear large, and will move real time. This is intended to give the presenter an obvious virtual pointer. When the local mouse cursor is hidden, the fast cursor will also be hidden.

Oracle and Dell

Technical certification is a foregone conclusion thanks to our partnership. Dell Hardware listed on the Oracle Hardware Certification Lists (HCL) are all qualified to run Solaris. This qualification serves as a reassurance to customers that their configuration has been tested and is enterprise-ready. Dell hardware will continue to be added and qualified over time, expanding the already large list of fully supported systems.

The Oracle Solaris Hardware Certification List (HCL) provides users with information about x86 servers, x86 64-bit servers certified for Oracle Solaris. In order to get support from Dell or Oracle for Solaris OS on Dell PowerEdge, Tower and Desktop, you must be using a certified server. Dell systems certified for Solaris have gone through rigorous testing standards as determined by the latest Hardware Certification Test Suite (HCTS). Dell systems listed on Oracle Solaris HCL as "certified" have been tested and validated by Dell and Oracle engineering teams and have met the certification test criteria.

Dell Precision Appliance for Wyse

Dell Precision Appliance for Wyse, Precision, Teamcenter, vdi, QST, Tecnomatix, CCC, solidworks, NVIDIA, PLM, ISV Certification, NX, PTC, graphics, appliance, Creo

Easy adoption: Dell Precision Appliance for Wyse eliminates much of the complexity and need for in-house expertise traditionally required by many virtualization solutions, so a staff with limited experience can deploy a virtual workstation environment not in days or weeks but in just a few hours.

Efficient scalability: As your business needs change, the Dell Precision Appliance for Wyse allows you to scale your virtual workstation environment in a modular fashion to meet growing demands.

An end-to-end solution: The Dell Precision Appliance for Wyse can be purchased separately or as part of an end-to-end solution that includes validated thin clients, management software and service offerings.

Graphics-intensive computing, centralized and virtualized

ISV certification: Deploy and run workstation class workloads, such as Siemens PLM, PTC Creo software and more, with confidence knowing that they have been certified on the Dell Precision Appliance for Wyse.

High-performance user environments: Users can expect the same rich, high-performance experience of an ISV certified workstation-class application with the Dell Precision Appliance for Wyse as a traditional fixed or mobile workstation.

Optimize infrastructure investments: Pool and efficiently share infrastructure resources, from compute to graphics, while delivering brilliant workstation class performance for up to thirty-two users per appliance.

Improve collaboration without compromising security

Reliable, controlled access: Permissions-based access grants users the ability to view and edit only the data they need as defined by your organization’s governance policies.

Increased mobility: Enable collaboration just about anywhere, without compromising security, from a variety of hardware endpoint devices, including multi-core thin clients and mobile devices, and software clients, such as VMware Horizon Client and Citrix Receiver. Since data is centralized, users can simply access what’s needed from their endpoint device instead of having to download huge data files onto their device.

Keep your data in the data center: Because critical, proprietary data resides in the data center and not at the endpoints, it never leaves your data center, giving you extra peace of mind if an endpoint device gets damaged, lost or stolen.

Introduction  (Back to top)

This document provides information about supported software, firmware, and hardware versions for the Dell Storage with Microsoft Storage Spaces solution (DSMS). The DSMS is a software-defined storage (SDS) platform that uses Microsoft Storage Spaces and Dell servers, storage, and networking to create a scalable file-server solution.

You can use this solution as a Scale-Out File Server (SOFS) or as a Converged solution. The SOFS solution uses the SOFS role with clustered Storage Spaces, in a disaggregated solution, where the compute workloads run on client servers separate from the storage nodes. The client servers use Server Message Block (SMB) to access SOFS file shares on the storage nodes. The Converged solution uses the Hyper-V role with clustered Storage Spaces, where the compute workloads run directly on the server cluster nodes.

This document is intended to support DSMS configurations, which have unique solution SKUs called Solution IDs. These DSMS solution IDs are required when ordering a DSMS configuration, and to access the benefits such as performance and sizing, optimized server and storage components, single-payload updates, and solution-level technical support. If you are in a geographical area outside of the US, the solution IDs are not available at this time. However, you may reference the configuration name instead. For the complete list of configuration solution IDs, see Dell Storage with Microsoft Storage Spaces Configurations and Solution IDs available at Dell Tech Center.

Dell Storage PS-SC Coexistence

Dell Storage, PS-SC Series

Why Dell PS-SC Coexistence?– Managing and running a business takes hard work.  As an IT manager, you make hundreds of decisions a week to keep the business humming and customers happy.  Many of your decisions revolve around technology, because smart, tech savvy businesses are always looking for that competitive advantage that will help them grow.  But, you are also practical and know that technology transitions can be  costly and time-consuming.

Replacing hardware and software can be expensive, and retraining staff takes time. Dealing with multiple suppliers can be difficult and managing data and information using multiple management portals can waste time.  Fortunately, Dell Storage has some new technologies that solve these problems.

Dell PS Series and SC Series storage solutions are like peanut butter and jelly; separate both are equally delicious and together make a great sandwich!  PS Series provides simplified management with a range of performance options .  SC Series provides advanced efficiency features (data reduction, auto-tiering)  and optimal flash performance.  Separately, each provides a powerful storage solution; but, together they provide future-proof integrated storage solutions that can be managed from a single portal.

Dell Storage Manager (DSM) software offers bidirectional, cross-platform replication for PS Series and SC Series arrays. DSM allows you to manage day-to-day tasks for both your PS and SC Series arrays using the same management portal making integration easy. You can also initiate volume replication between PS and SC Series with DSM and easily configure and monitor replication tasks.

“The Dell Storage Cross-Platform Replication feature was very easy to set up. Using Dell Storage Manager (DSM) to do Cross-Platform Replication was easy and straightforward as well. A Dell Storage PS Series user will definitely be able to quickly achieve replication via DSM without any time consuming training.”

– Hans de Jongh, Director/Owner, IT Creation

If you already have PS Series arrays deployed in your data center, then you can continue to add more PS Series arrays, consider SC Series arrays or even invest in both lines. If you decide to transition to SC Series over time, you can protect your current IT investment by deploying your PS and SC Series arrays in the same storage environment.  Dell fully supports PS Series and SC Series together in the same environment. Therefore, no need for multi-vendor support contracts; your tech support needs are simplified.

To learn more about how Dell’s cross-platform replication technology and how Dell Storage Manager can streamline your data center, please read Dell Storage Cross-Platform Replication Solutions Guide , watch Dell Storage Cross-Platform Replication video and Dell Storage Manager: Day-to-day Management video, or ask your Dell representative.

Do you have any storage TCO questions?-The Dell Storage TCO Calculator helps PS Series customers evaluate the financial advantages of maintaining a PS-centric environment or mixing/migrating to a different storage platform.

Based on key inputs about your storage needs, this tool delivers total cost of ownership (TCO) projections, allowing you to email a report for future use.
