The path to a hybrid cloud for customers is often evolutionary impacting applications, security, infrastructure and the operating model.  Of late, many of our customers have been struggling with the choice between Azure Stack and an Azure Pack with Windows Server based on-prem cloud. With Azure Stack clearly being the  Azure-like cloud on-prem, does it make

The path from Windows Server and Azure Pack to Azure Stack is further along that evolutionary path, with new demands on applications and changes in management and solution architectures. Preparing for the journey and starting on the right path are the key steps to success in hybrid cloud.

With applications (cows vs pets), you begin by rationalizing your virtualized applications, VMs or mulit-tier apps. Examples like web applications, Business Application, SQL, Exchange and other Microsoft or Linux VMs.  These arer often your pets characterized by consumption based on reserved capacity, scale up architectures, heavy maintenance (high availability, DR strategies, maintenance activities like P&U). Today, a majority of enterprise applications (%?) fall in this category and are the first to move to a Azure Pack and Windows Server based hybrid cloud infrastructure.

Cows on the other hand, are a growing set of applications developed by Software teams within companies based on cloud native principles, platforms and tooling. These applications are characterized by on-demand capacity consumption, scale out, api driven, low maintenance immutable services(as an example you don’t patch or reconfigure a service, you destroy and deploy a new updated instance). Sometimes also called “cloud native”, these applications are increasing built on PaaS services like Service fabric, IoT, DBaaS with tools like Visual Studio providing the continuous delivery on platforms like Azure and Azure Stack.

Azure- like experience -on-prem with Azure Pack and Windows Server

If your applications are mostly pets, Azure Pack provides the IaaS capabilities to migrate your pets yet benefit from the Cloud Infrastructure and operating model. It is built on proven and well-understood technologies like Windows Azure Pack, System Center and Windows Server, integrating well with your existing datacenter investments while providing you a path to the cloud at lower cost, complexity and risk.

Azure consistency on-prem with Azure Stack

If your applications are mostly cows, you are either already building\running applications on the public cloud and looking to bring them (or some) on-prem. With these applications, Azure Stack provides you with the services (Eg: service fabric, IoT, DBaaS) and developer tooling (Azure SDK, Visual Studio) to be able to build cloud native application and take advantage of the Azure consistency to either scale or run particular applications and services in a Hybrid model. With Azure consistency, you get the same architecture and components that powers Azure with the ability to develop and deliver applications that run either on-prem or on Azure seamlessly. As a result, the underlying cloud infrastructure introduces new technologies like nano server (and a new Infrastructure Management tooling), Resource providers, Azure Resource Manager with a truly hyper-scale architecture. As a result you have to retool your organization that might otherwise be operating technologies like System Center and Windows Server.

As applications evolve, most customers will start with predominantly pets, but over time acquire a healthy mix of pets and cattle. Disclaimer: Dell does not offer support for Windows Server 2016 at this time.  Dell is actively testing and working closely with Microsoft on Windows Server 2016, but since it is still in development, the exact hardware components/configurations that Dell will fully support are still being determined.  The information divulged in our online documents prior to Dell launching and shipping Windows Server 2016 may not directly reflect Dell supported product offerings with the final release of Windows Server 2016. We are, however, very interested in your results/feedback/suggestions. Please send them to WinServerBlogs@dell.com

To provide a secure environment for virtual machines, Windows Server 2016 has introduced the Guarded Fabric which comprises Host Guardian Service (HGS) and Guarded Hosts hosting a set of shielded VMs. HGS uses the Remote Attestation Service to ensure that only known, healthy hosts can run shielded VMs, and the Key Protection Service to securely release the keys for Shielded VMs.

As recommended, TPM-Trusted attestation (vs. Admin-Trusted attestation, which is weaker) uses UEFI Secure Boot, in conjunction with code integrity measurement, to ensure that the Hyper-V host is healthy and running only trusted code. Dell 13th Generation PowerEdge servers are available for order with TPM 2.0, as a configurable option.

To deploy TPM-Trusted attestation, HGS uses the TPM Identifier (EKpub) to determine whether a particular host is authorized on the guarded fabric. Dell TPM 2.0 modules are manufactured with a built-in Endorsement Key (EK) certificate (except TPM 2.0 in the China market. See: China TPM Note at the end of this document). Being the root of trust in remote attestation, genuineness of a TPM module is essential to the full trust chain. Dell TPM 2.0 modules are fully certified (such as FIPS, Common Criteria, or Trusted Computing Group) for this scenario.

This blog, coauthored with Qiang Wang (Microsoft Corporation), provides HGS administrators with a walkthrough on how to manually retrieve the TPM EK certificate and its certificate authority chain. After trustworthiness has been verified, the signer certificate authority is registered with HGS server for enforcement, i.e., only a host that contains a TPM 2.0 with an EK certificate that chains to the registered signer certificate authority is allowed to be a Guarded Host. A Dell server also ensures a binding between the TPM module and the server to prevent the same TPM from being used on multiple Dell servers.

To start this process, first verify the TPM is a v 2.0 module and it is ready on the host by using the TPM Management Console (tpm.msc) or running Get-Tpm in an elevated PowerShell window. If the TPM is not ready or “Ready with reduced functionality”, run Clear TPM in the TPM Management Console or run the following commands in the PowerShell window. (The system will need to reboot.)

$tpm = gwmi -class win32_tpm -namespace root/cimv2/security/microsofttpm
$tpm.SetPhysicalPresenceRequest(22)

In order to validate the TPM EK certificate, a chain of trust is established from a trusted certificate to the EK certificate. The TPM 2.0 on Dell PowerEdge 13G servers do not contain any intermediate certificates in the chain, i.e., the root certificate directly signs the EK certificate. A Windows-logo-compliant EK certificate contains an Authority Information Access (AIA) extension that includes a URL for the issuing Certificate Authority. The AIA extension allows the issuing certificate to be discovered so it can be retrieved.  Run the following commands in the elevated PowerShell window on any Guarded Host:

# Retrieve the EK cert
$ekCert = (Get-TpmEndorsementKeyInfo).ManufacturerCertificates

# Obtain the X509 AIA extension
$aiaExt = $ekCert.Extensions | where { $_.Oid.Value -eq "1.3.6.1.5.5.7.1.1" }

# Retrieve the URL from the AIA extension
$aiaExt.Format($false) -match "URL=([^,]*)"

# Retrieve the root certificate per the URL and save it to a file. You may use any name to save the file on disk.
$caFilePath = "C:\certs\Nuvoton TPM Root CA 1110.cer"
Invoke-WebRequest $matches[1] -OutFile $caFilePath

# Review the root certificate file you obtained (change the file name and path if needed). The screen shot below is a signer certificate from a known good Dell 13th Generation PowerEdge server. You can use it as a reference.
New-Object Security.Cryptography.X509Certificates.X509Certificate2 -ArgumentList (,[byte[]](Get-Content -Encoding Byte "C:\certs\Nuvoton TPM Root CA 1110.cer")) | fl

On a HGS server node that you intend to validate the Guarded Hosts, securely transfer the root certificate file you retrieved on the Guarded Host to each HGS server, and import the root certificate file for the Guarded Host with the following commands.

$certStore = "Cert:\LocalMachine\TrustedTpm_RootCA"

# Modify path to the file you created
$caFilePath = “E:\Nuvoton TPM Root CA 1110.cer”

Import-Certificate $caFilePath -CertStoreLocation $certStore

The above procedure is required for each TPM model. All Dell 13th Generation PowerEdge servers share the same TPM model, with the exception of the China market. Therefore, you only need to do it once for your entire Dell Guarded Host fabric.

Your HGS server can now validate the host identity (EKpub) captured from your TPM 2.0-enabled Dell servers, and add them to the Attestation services in HGS.

1. To obtain the EKpub, run the following on the guarded host:

(Get-PlatformIdentifier -Name MyGuardedHost).Save("C:\MyGuardedHost.xml")

2. Copy the EKPub file, e.g., C:\MyGuardedHost.xml, to the HGS Server or servers – all Hosts will need to have this process performed.  Be sure to give each EKpub file for each server a unique name.

3. Run the following command on the HGS server to add the Dell server as a TPM-trusted guarded host to the Attestation service in HGS:

Add-HgsAttestationTpmHost –Path MyGuardedHost.xml –Name MyGuardedHost

#verify the added TPM-trusted guarded host
Get-HgsAttestationTpmHost

4. Repeat these steps for each Guarded Host system.

Note on China TPM:
On the PowerEdge servers being shipped in China, the TPM 2.0 modules do not contain a built-in EK certificate due to Chinese government regulations. In this case, you may use a 3rd party service to certify the EKpub or simply skip the validation with the use of “-Force” if the setup is deemed to be secure.
Add-HgsAttestationTpmHost –Path MyGuardedHost.xml –Name MyGuardedHost -Force

Follow the instructions in Step-by-Step Guide: Deploy Guarded Hosts and Shielded Virtual Machines to complete the deployment of the Guarded Fabric. Together, Windows Server 2016 and Dell PowerEdge Servers with TPM 2.0 can enable you to build a secured datacenter solution to protect your tenants’ workloads from the host administrators and possibly tempered datacenter environment.

Dell Family Driver Packs

NEWS  The driver pack format is changing from .cab to .zip.  If using ImageAssist, download the latest release to obtain support for .zip driver packs.

The driver packs on this page work with ImageAssist, KACE, MDT& SCCM deployments.  They are consolidated, combining models by generation rather than being model specific.  These packs are developed and sustained by Dell's Global Configuration Services group.  For support, please post comments directly to this page.

Drivers used during the development process have been tested and qualified by our Dell Product Group for both platform and factory integration.  There are times when newer drivers are provided by vendors, but in order to get these drivers to customers more quickly they are validated and posted online to support.dell.com.  (where Dell Command Update pulls from) These updated drivers if deemed required or critical will be tested, validated and integrated into the factory process during a future release.  Hence, there may be a delta between when a driver is ‘web-posted’ to support.dell.com and when it gets added to the relevant driver package.

Turn on page notifications for updates. (bottom right - requires logging in.)

The PowerEdge FN I/O Aggregator

The PowerEdge FN I/O Aggregator

FX2, Cloud Integration, fibre channel, Converged Architecture, CMC, FX, FC, 13th Gen, Enterprise, dell PowerEdge, Dell, 13th Generation, Dell TechCenter

The PowerEdge FN I/O Aggregator (IOA) for the FX2 converged system is a modular I/O device focused on ease of use for the server admin. The device aggregates Ethernet traffic from compute nodes (including converged storage traffic) from the FX2 chassis.

Key Features of the FN I/O Aggregator:

  1. Simplified Management

    1. Simplifies connectivity by as much as 8-to-1, reducing cabling complexity

    2. Functions as a Plug-n-Play networking device providing a low touch experience for server admins.

    3. Provides many automated set up and networking functions making for minimal touch for basic to advanced features.

    4. GUI based management via the Chassis Management Controller of the FX2 Chassis (CMC).

  2. Optimized FX2 Performance

    1. The FN I/O Aggregator provides a cost effective 10GbE solution leveraging Dell’s next generation servers.

    2. Dell Active Fabric optimizes East/West traffic bringing lower latency and superior overall performance.

  3. Zero-touch converged I/O

    1. The FN I/O Aggregator provides zero-touch FCoE enabling an automated LAN/SAN converged solution.

    2. The FN I/O Aggregator easily connects to the S5000 as well as many popular Fibre Channel switches for a fully converged LAN/SAN network.

    3. With converged I/O customers are able to achieve up to a 75% reduction in cables, 75% reduction in ToR ports, and 50% reduction in adapters.

    4. The FN2210s I/O Aggregator module has both Ethernet and Fibre Channel, providing convergence at the I/O to the SAN array.

Each FX2 chassis can house 2 FN I/O Aggregators in the back of the chassis. Its plug-n-play features allow it to be managed by the server administrator without having the expertise of a network administrator. Traditionally, network administrators have managed network core, aggregation and access layers while server administrators have solely focused on servers. With the adoption of server virtualization, the immediate virtual access layer (i.e. hypervisor-based switching) has fallen into the server administrators’ domain. The advent of 10GbE adoption has pushed further delineation of the access layer to hardware vs a new virtual access layer. With the FN IOA, the network administrator only needs to send VLANs to the IOA and the VLAN assignments can be made by the server administrator from the virtual access layer.

Hardware Characteristics

There are three different types of FN I/OA modules for the FX2 platform. All modules can be ordered as factory installed or after point of sales (APOS). All three FN I/O Aggregator modules support 8 internal/server facing 10GbE KR ports (numbered 1-8) and 4 external ports (numbered 9-12). It is noteworthy to call out the uniqueness of the FN2210S (also sometimes referred to as the combo module). This FN2210S allows the user to truly have convergence at the box. In default mode, this module will have 2-ports 1GbE/10GbE & 2-ports Fiber Channel SFP+. Users can convert the Fibre Channel ports to 2 additional 1/10GbE SFP+ ports enabling 4 ports of 1/10GbE SFP+ (with reboot).

*The Dell PowerEdge FN2210S I/O Aggregator uses NPIV Proxy Gateway (NPG) to provide the capability to use converged FCoE inside the FX architecture platform while maintaining traditional unconverged Ethernet and native FIbre Channel outside of the FX platform. The FN2210S manages the following items:

1. DCB (PFC, ETS, and DCBx)

2. FIP discovery and initialization

3. FLOGI and FDISC conversion process

4. FIP keep alives

For communication outside the platform, the FN2210S manages all traffic out the external Ethernet ports (these ports can be in DCB or non-DCB mode) and converts all FCoE packets to native FC packets and directs them out the native Fibre channel ports of the FN2210S. The FN2210S acts as an NPG connecting the converged network Adapters (CNAs) in the FX platform to the external Fibre Channel fabric. When the FN2210S is installed, the FX architecture platform appears as an FCF to the CNAs while the FN2210S ports appear as NPIV N_ports (i.e. HBA ports) to the external Fibre Channel Fabric. The FN2210S does not provide any fabric services.

Note: The FN2210S NPG does not provide fabric services.

Overview

Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) is gaining momentum throughout the telecommunications community because it can significantly improve your service-delivery cost structures and agility. Achieve this feat by combining the latest in software-defined networking (SDN) technologies with the economic advantages of virtualized x86 compute platforms, deployed strategically throughout the service infrastructure.

As a leader in both SDN and x86 technologies, we’re paving the way with NFV solutions for telecommunications providers, cable operators and mobile operators. Get a 100 percent open, fully converged platform for end-customer service providers, third-party vendors, integrators and original equipment manufacturer (OEM) partners to help you create and launch your own NFV-based services.

  • 100 percent open and standards-basedBuild a solution on industry-standard Intel x86 compute platforms combined with open networking platforms and a rich set of open interfaces — ensuring maximum interoperability, manageability and investment protection.
  • Scalable in any directionOur NFV solutions scale to accommodate a wide range of your design goals, service capabilities and environmental conditions, ranging from service for small, unstaffed points-of-presences (POPs) to central office environments to hyperscale data centers.
  • Maximum choice and flexibility- Support the widest range of software configurations with mix-and-match modularity. Choose from different Linux and OpenStack distributions, data plane acceleration technologies, and service chaining and orchestration packages to tailor the Dell NFV platform the way you need it.
