January 2018 - NOTICE!

This is an advance end-of-life (EOL) and deprecation notice for the Dell Deployment Toolkit (DTK). DTK will be sustained for current and earlier supported platforms until those platforms pass their end of support life (EOSL) threshold. Support for DTK on future platforms beyond the current 14th generation (14G) systems is not anticipated.

Dell recommends that customers using DTK transition to the Remote Access Controller Admin (RACADM) utility. RACADM is a command line tool that allows for remote or local management of Dell servers via the integrated Dell Remote Access Controller (iDRAC) that is embedded in every PowerEdge server. RACADM provides similar functionality to the iDRAC’s web interface. Another plus is that the Dell Chassis Management Controller (CMC), an embedded management controller for blade servers, can also be managed remotely with RACADM.
RACADM commands can be run remotely from a management station and/or locally on the managed system. RACADM commands allow operations such as viewing system information, performing power operations, firmware updates, and configuring settings. Since RACADM is run from a command line interface (CLI), system administrators can create scripts that control and update Dell multiple systems at the same time.

===========================================================================

The Dell OpenManage Deployment Toolkit (DTK) includes a set of utilities, sample scripts, and sample configuration files that you can use to deploy and configure the Dell systems. You can use DTK to build script-based and RPM-based installation for deploying large number of systems on a pre-operating system environment in a reliable way, without changing their current deployment processes. Using DTK you can install operating systems on Dell systems in BIOS or Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) mode.

In addition to the command line utilities used to configure various system features, DTK also provides sample scripts and configuration files to perform common deployment tasks and documentation. These files and scripts describe the use of the DTK in Microsoft Windows Pre-installation Environment (Windows PE) and Linux environments.

The benefits of the DTK:

  • Provides the tools necessary to automate the pre-operating system configuration tasks and the unattended operating system installation tasks when deploying PowerEdge systems.
  • Scales to support from one to many system deployment efforts.
  • Facilitates consistent system configurations across multiple systems.
  • Provides diverse and useful deployment tools that can be utilized in many different ways.

Dell OpenManage

Dell OpenManage is a set of systems management applications built using industry standard protocols and specifications. Dell OpenManage is not a product within itself, but rather a brand name for the suite of products in the portfolio. Server Administrator (OMSA) is part of OpenManage family.

You can refer various Enterprise Systems Management manuals to learn more about the Dell products.

Dell OpenManage Server Admininstrator

Dell OpenManage Server Administrator (OMSA) is a software agent that provides a comprehensive, one-to-one systems management solution in two ways: from an integrated, Web browser-based graphical user interface (GUI) and from a command line interface (CLI) through the operating system.

OMSA is designed so that system administrators can manage server systems both locally and remotely on a network. It also interfaces with OpenManage Essentials (OME) console, which allows for monitoring of the systems in your data center from a single interface.

Dell Family Driver Packs

Family Pack Downloader, Downloads, ImageAssist, Drivers

Family Pack Downloader (ImageAssist Module) is a tool developed by Dell Configuration Services that enables you to download the latest Dell Family Driver Packs for your Dell systems. This tool allows you to configure and select different Dell models, OS and BITS versions to customize which Family Driver Packs you will get. Each time the tool is re-launched it can check for new versions based on the configurations you selected previously and keep your Family Driver Packs up to the currently released version. Download the latest release using the link below:

The driver packs on this page work with ImageAssist, KACE, MDT& SCCM deployments.  They are consolidated, combining models by generation rather than being model specific.  These packs are developed and sustained by Dell's Global Configuration Services group.  For support, please post comments directly to this page.

Drivers used during the development process have been tested and qualified by our Dell Product Group for both platform and factory integration.  There are times when newer drivers are provided by vendors, but in order to get these drivers to customers more quickly they are validated and posted online to support.dell.com.  (where Dell Command Update pulls from) These updated drivers if deemed required or critical will be tested, validated and integrated into the factory process during a future release.  Hence, there may be a delta between when a driver is ‘web-posted’ to support.dell.com and when it gets added to the relevant driver package.

Turn on page notifications for updates. (bottom right - requires logging in.)

Highlights of Server Storage Product

  • HWRAIDandSW

    • ThePowerEdge RAID controllers support 4KB and512bytes block size disk drives, which enablesenable efficient use of the storage space.
    • The SW RAID is an economical RAID solution for the Dell PowerEdge systems. This solution offers a
    • straight-forward solution that includes essential RAID levels and uncomplicated configuration options.
    • The Shared PERC 8 controller enables all server modules to efficiently access the low-latency internal shared storage, in the VRTX enclosure that is essential for clustering and virtualization, including vMotion.
    • The Shared PERC 8 controller also helps enable efficient processing through peak periods and improves server-use flexibility.
    • The PERC FD33xS and PERC FD33xD controllers are exclusively designed to support the PowerEdge FD332 storage sled. These storage controller(s), inside a storage sled, map to compute sled(s) in the FX2s enclosure. This provides the PowerEdge FD332 with an excellent option to enable dense virtual SAN clusters, by combining compute and storage sleds. It helps in creating an easily scalable storage environment, which supports balanced data growth that is customizable. This enables you to tailor your storage needs to the workloads you are running and also avoid overprovisioning.

1.0 Install / Deploy
*

1.1
Q: I can't get past the EULA screen since the resolution seems incorrect.

A: Display scaling in Windows 8/Windows 10 can affect the vSphere Standalone Client in such a way that you may not be able to
properly see the entire screen to accept the EULA, set the master password, and configure initial network settings. In this case
it is recommended to utilize the vSphere web interface to connect to the VM console to accept the EULA and set the initial network
configuration.

If for some reason the above is not available, it is recommended to edit the compatibility settings for the vSphere client shortcut and
choose "Disable display scaling on high DPI settings".

4.1
Q: My firmware catalog is not getting created on the NFS share.
A: If your NFS is on a Windows OS check permissions and mapping: https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc770843(v=ws.11).aspx#BKMK_15

4.2
Q: Are there any other tips for getting the NFS share setup on Linux for firmware updates?
A: Here’s the article link: https://www.tecmint.com/how-to-setup-nfs-server-in-linux/

Once you have NFS server setup and running on your Linux server, enable the following settings (yours may vary depending on your config):

[root@testlinux2048 ~]# mkdir /nfsshare
[root@testlinux2048 ~]# vi /etc/exports
# Entry for Dell OME
/nfsshare 172.20.22.5(rw,sync,no_root_squash)

From OpenManage Enterprise, choose “NFS” as your Share Type, input the IP Address of the Linux server in Share Address, and type in the appropriate path in the Catalog File Path (i.e. nfsshare/catalog.xml).
(Thx EH!)

5.0 Device Management
*

5.1
Q: When I click "Launch Virtual Console" for a server, nothing launches.
A: Your browser settings may be blocking popups. Add rule in your browser security settings to allow popups from the desired server.

5.2
Q: When I click "Launch Virtual Console" for a server, nothing launches but a JNLP file is downloaded.
A: This happens when the virtual console on the server is set to "Java". Double click the JNLP file in your downloads folder to launch the virtual console. Or better yet, you can configure the Virtual Console on the iDRAC so that it launches in HTML5.

5.3
Q: When I click "Launch Virtual Console" for a server, it does not launch.
A: See 5.2 above, and also check your iDRAC version level (pre 14G), you may need 2.50.50.50 or above.

*
7.0 Templates/Server Configuration
*

7.1
Q: When I create a server or chassis configuration template, the job fails with error related to inability to access remote share.
A: This might be due to disabled SMB V1 on the appliance. To resolve this, go to Application Settings -> Console Preferences, expand the setting "SMB Setting", select the radio button "Enable V1", and hit "Apply".
It could be related to your firewall rules. Enabling SMBv1 support is not recommended except where needed. Reach out to your Dell support representative to see if there is an update for your server to enable SMB V2 support.

7.2
Q:(TechRelease)Ididatemplateextractfromaserverandcansee“calvin”or“***”inthepasswordfield,isthisgoingtosetoroverwritemyiDRACpassword?

What is the performance impact for my SAP applications due to platform BIOS and OS Kernel patches addressing the Spector/Meltdown vulnerabilities?

Revision 1 posted to TechCenter Extras - Wiki by Mahmoud Ahmadian on 2/28/2018 3:23:00 PM

The standard method to measure raw system performance for SAP workloads is the SAP-SD Benchmark. It runs a streamlined “order from stock” workload. Although this benchmark is good at measuring overall systems raw performance, it represents only one of the many customer workload scenarios. With the SAP-SD benchmark, we usually run at 95%+ utilization to show a machine’s maximum performance whereas customers’ utilization rarely exceeds 60%.

Therefore, SAP-SD benchmark is useful as a performance tool for sizing and comparisons, i.e. system A vs system B. The same is true for SAP’s benchmarks that use SAP HANA as the database. While they serve well as comparative tools, the workloads are only a special scenario of what customers typically deploy.

So what should systems providers tell their customers when they ask: “What is the performance impact of platform BIOS and OS Kernel patches addressing the Spector/Meltdown vulnerabilities for my SAP applications?”

As often is the case, the answer is: “it depends.” Because every customer’s scenario is different. Various SAP applications workloads combined with varying systems hardware configurations, make it difficult to provide the customer with a prediction of performance impacts with a high degree of confidence.

For further information, please refer to SAP notes 2585591 (for Windows OS), 2586312 (Linux OSes), and 2383191 (for HANA deployments).

Dell EMC ScaleIO Ready Nodes Solution Overview

Dell EMC ScaleIO Ready Nodes are validated and optimized building blocks for a software-defined block storage system that combines Dell EMC PowerEdge servers with ScaleIO software. This solution reduces the time IT organizations spend in planning and deploying a new enterprise grade software-defined storage (SDS) infrastructure. These nodes are also pre-configured, tested with certified components to provide the best performance possible. This reduces deployment risks and simplify ordering too.

ScaleIO Ready Node provides different server node configurations that are designed to be optimized for capacity or performance, and any combination in between. You can select pre-validated configurations, including All-Flash, All-HDD and Hybrid options, on by PowerEdge 1U1N servers (R630, R640) and 2U1N servers (R730xd and R740xd). All this, in a solution that’s fully supported by a single vendor – Dell EMC – for streamlined, collaborative support from the first call.

New features in Dell EMC ScaleIO Ready Node 2.5

Revision 1 posted to TechCenter Extras - Wiki by Vineeth_A_C on 3/3/2018 1:46:43 PM

Following are some of the new features introduced in ScaleIO Ready Node 2.5.

AMS support for PowerEdge 14G Servers

  • AMS now manages and orchestrates ScaleIO Ready Node deployments based on PowerEdge 14G configurations.
  • AMS now provides flexible NIC selection for 14G (and 13G) nodes during the following networking configuration activities:
    • Deployment - data network configuration.
    • Compute network configuration.

AMS management takeover of non-managed nodes

The AMS can "take ownership" of all the nodes on an existing ScaleIO Ready Node system that is currently running ScaleIO without AMS management. When the process is complete, all the servers in the system are managed with the AMS.

The take-ownership process is performed from the ScaleIO GUI together with AMS CLI/ REST command.

This feature is only supported when all of the following are present:

  • PowerEdge 13G or 14G based ScaleIO Ready Nodes.
  • ESXi 6.0 U3, ESXi 6.5 U1, RHEL 7.3, or RHEL 7.4.
  • AMS supported networking architectures.

Firmware patching

  • During deployment, AMS will patch any 13G or 14G based ScaleIO Ready Nodes with the latest approved firmware. New nodes will be automatically aligned to the latest firmware versions upon deployment.

Simplified deployment of ScaleIO Ready Nodes

With ScaleIO AMS 2.5, during deployment, you can perform the following:

  • Configure DNS and NTP server addresses for all the ScaleIO OS images and hypervisors.
  • Assign a name label to each node.
  • Assign a location label to each node.
  • Assign comments to nodes for troubleshooting purposes.
  • New deployment UI provides the ability to select all, apply to all, and filter by S/N or by name.

AMS recovery improvements

Recovering an AMS server that has gone down now includes recovery of all of its nodes, as well as vCenter and ESRS information. The improved process is achieved by saving a backup of the current AMS configuration files on the MDM nodes that use them. This shortens the recovery time significantly and eliminates the need to scan nodes to build the repository.

AMS log collection improvements

You can collect logs in a ScaleIO Ready Node AMS environment using the GUI, AMS CLI, and REST API. Log collection has been enhanced in the following ways:

  • In addition to the ScaleIO and AMS logs, now RAID controller, iDRAC and OS logs (including ESXi) are collected.
  • You can make on-the-fly selection of which logs types to collect and on which nodes.
  • The multi-phase collection process enables you to know log file size and to manage space and resource limits before they occur.
  • In the deployment wizard, a log collection button was added to simplify collecting logs during this process.

Compute and network feature enhancements

  • vSphere 6.5 is now supported.
  • Networking flexibility enhancements:
    • Any port, on any node, can now be selected for Compute networking use.
    • Up to 3 vSwitches/ DVS can now be configured.
    • Up to 10 VM networks can now be configured per vSwitch/ DVS.
    • User experience improvements.
