Problem:

How do I Create Volumes from Replays for Consistency Group using Dell Compellent Storage Center?

Solution:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dell Compellent Storage snapshot terminology is referred as Data Instant Replay (DIR) or replay which is part of Storage Center Core License which comes by default. Replay is a point-in-time-copy (PITC) of a volume to provide fast recovery from server failures, viruses, power outages, human error and data hazards by restoring a replay and recover in less than 10 seconds. They are space efficient which captures incremental changes in data since the last replay for real-time protection with instant recovery to any point in time.  Replays are used for Oracle Database RMAN Backup offloading, Point-in-Time Database recovery and Complete Database Recovery.

Replay profile is a collection of rules depicting replay interval and their expiry time. Create Consistent Replay profile and assign to all Database volumes. Consistent Replay Profiles allow you maintain consistent set of replay data across multiple volumes.

Consistency group is to create a usable snapshot of running database volumes to maintain a consistent set of replay data across multiple volumes. To ensure consistency, volume IO is halted for all volumes using the Replay Profile while replays are created for each volume. Once replays have been created for each volume, IO is resumed.

The following example illustrates how to create volumes from replays for Consistency Group and map to Server, create volumes from replays which are used to restore the database volumes in case of Oracle Database Recovery using Dell Compellent Storage Center GUI.

  1. Create Volumes from Replays for Consistency Group.
  2. Create Volume from Replay for a single volume.

For Compellent FC storage array cabling, create volumes, zoning, configure host access to volumes refer to the below link http://en.community.dell.com/techcenter/enterprise-solutions/w/oracle_solutions/3-1-1-compellent.aspx

1 Create Volumes from Replays for Consistency Group

To create volumes from replays for consistency group select the Replays tab. Right Click on the replay created from the replay profile and Click on Create Volumes for Consistency Group

Click on Create Now to create volumes for Consistency Group with values entered in the table for New Volume Name and New Volume Folder. Volumes will be mapped to Server as per the values selected.

2 Create Volume from Replay for a single volume.

To create volume from replay select the Replays tab. Right Click on the replay and Click on Create Volume from Replay.

Select the Volume Folder for the volume and then provide the name for the View Volume. Click on Create Now to create the view volume from replay.

Select the Server Cluster or Server and then Click on Continue to Map Volume to Server.

Click on Create Now to create mapping between the following Volume and Server.

Click on OK to finish the create volume from replay and map to server.
