Troubleshooting Information for Dell Server Deployment Pack

Installation

For all the installation issues please review the log files located under the following path.

  • For Configuration Manager 2007: <Configuration Manager 2007 SiteInstallDir>\AdminUI\XmlStorage\Extensions\bin\Deployment\Dell\PowerEdge\setup
  • For Configuration Manager 2012: <Configuration Manager 2012 AdminConsoleInstallDir>\AdminConsole\XmlStorage\Extensions\bin\Deployment\Dell\PowerEdge\setup

Installation of DSDP fails giving an error “Error Processing XML File” and installer stops.

Open the installer log file and check for the error message details. This issue can be seen for many reasons. You should check when this error is coming by looking at the XML file that is getting processed currently. Look for the text similar to this

“Processing XML file: <Configuration Manager Admin Console Install Path>\XmlStorage\Extensions\bin\Deployment\Dell\PowerEdge\setup\Install_<SOMENAME>.xml”

  1. Failing for Install_000_MOF.xml or Install_001_CustomReboot_MOF.xml: This might be due to permission issues. You should have administrator permission as we are compiling a MOF file in to WMI. Ensure that you are launching the Installer as administrator. If UAC is enabled launch the installer by opening a Command Prompt as “Run As Administrator” option.
  2. Failing for Install_301_Toolkit.xml: This might be due to permission issue in Configuration Manager.
    1. In case of Configuration Manager 2012 ensure that the user should have “Operating System Deployment Manager” Administrator privilege.
    2. In case of Configuration Manager 2007 ensure that user has Full permissions for the “Deployment package” class.
  3. Failing for Install_600_CustomAction.xml:  If the setup of Configuration Manager is an Upgrade from SMS 2003 there is an issue and it can be corrected by following steps.
    1. Check the following registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\SMS\Setup\UI Installation Directory
    2. Verify that the data is set to the actual console directory - for example, we have seen this value set to D:\SMS, when it should be D:\SMS\AdminUI

Deployment Toolkit Configuration Wizard and Create Boot Image Wizard

For all the issues related to these wizards please review the log files located under the following path.

List of Log files:

  1. DellConfigWizard.log
  2. DellConfigWizardDebug.log
  3. DellConfigWizardDebug1.log
  • For Configuration Manager 2007: <Configuration Manager 2007 SiteInstallDir>\AdminUI\XmlStorage\Extensions\bin\Deployment\Dell\PowerEdge\
  • For Configuration Manager 2012: <Configuration Manager 2012 AdminConsoleInstallDir>\AdminConsole\XmlStorage\Extensions\bin\Deployment\Dell\PowerEdge\setup

If the issue is due to driver import failure ensure that following KBs are installed.

  • On systems running ConfigMgr 2007 SP1, download and apply the hotfix provided in the Microsoft knowledge base articles KB970170 and KB961105.
  • On systems running ConfigMgr 2007 SP2, download and apply the hotfix provided in the Microsoft knowledge base articles KB979492 and KB978754.

If the DTK configuration wizard completes with errors, while upgrading the DTK package on systems running Configuration Manager 2007

  1. Check if the log file contains text similar to Utilities::ExtractDTK: Exception occurred during extraction.”
  2. If the text mentioned above exists, it is due to a driver catalog file that has been in use by WMI process.
  3. Restart the WMI process.
  4. Retry the DTK package import operation to import it successfully.

Import Driver Package Wizard

For all the issues related to the wizard please review the log files located under the following path.

List of Log files:

  • On systems running ConfigMgr 2007 SP2, download and apply the hotfix provided in the Microsoft knowledge base articles KB979492 and KB978754.
